Yerba Mate is the most consumed drink in South America and its notoriety continues to grow in Europe, notably thanks to football players such as Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, Luis Suarez.
The Yerba Mate plant
Yerba Mate is a drink obtained by infusing the plant of Yerba Mate. Yerba Mate, scientifically named Ilex Paraguariensis, is cultivated in South America, in mountain forests between 500 m and 700 m altitude.
Yerba mate is grown only on the border between three South American countries: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Other countries that sell Yerba import it from one of these three countries.
Its tree is pruned so that it does not exceed 8 m in height when cultivated, but it can grow up to 20 m in the wild.
Although mate is often associated with tea, these two plants are different.
